E-Pedal system lets you drive without touching the brakes
Nissan continues to tease the next-generation Leaf ahead of its official debut. This time, the automaker took the time to show off the car’s E-Pedal feature that lets drivers turn the accelerator into a pedal that accelerates, brakes, and even allows the driver to hold the car on a hill. Nissan says that drivers can cover 90 percent of their driving using the E-Pedal and will minimize the need to shuffle their feet to get from the accelerator to the brake pedal in heavy traffic.
The E-Pedal, according to Nissan, is the world’s first feature that promotes one-pedal driving and is part of the automaker’s commitment to bringing advanced driving assistance features to mainstream consumers. It’s part of the automaker’s Intelligent Mobility program that aims to transform the way people driver their vehicles. Nissan’s next-generation Leaf electric vehicle will be the first vehicle to come with the E-Pedal feature, which can be activated by pressing the E-Pedal switch near the gear selector. Once engaged, simply let off the gas to slow down, and release the pedal completely to stop. If you’ve ever driven one of Disney’s Autopia cars, this should feel familiar. Though Nissan’s setup will be unique, it won’t be the first one-pedal driving feature. The Chevrolet Bolt EV and Volt plug-in offer a Regen on Demand paddle that uses regenerative braking to slow down and come to a stop in traffic.
Nissan will reveal the second-generation Leaf on September 5. The new car is expected to offer more range than the current-generation vehicle. It will also feature the ProPilot system, a semi-autonomous driving system that helps in accelerating, braking, and steering to keep the car in its lane.
