The Honda Civic Type R proved its performance chops when it set a record-breaking time of 7 minutes, 43.80 seconds around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. On the latest episode of Ignition, host Jethro Bovingdon finds out if this magic can be replicated on everyday roads, before handing over the keys to four-time IndyCar champion and Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon, who laps the Type R around Willow Springs.

The first Civic Type R to make its way to the U.S. features a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a six-speed manual, this hatch can reach 60 mph in 5.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 169 mph. Despite what you may expect from a front-wheel-drive car, the Type R produces hardly any torque steer, as Bovingdon points out. Braking feels natural, and traction control doesn’t overstep its boundaries. However, the Type R could feel more responsive. In the sportiest drive mode, steering can feel overly heavy despite good programming for the suspension and throttle.

After carving corners in the Civic Type R, it’s time to head to the track to record some numbers. With Dixon at the wheel, the Type R sets an impressive time around Willow Springs. Was it enough to beat the Ford Focus RS or the Subaru WRX STI? Find out in the video below.
